Homemade Bakery

Double Pepperoni Cheese Twist, Pepperoni Pizza Bread, Cheddary Parmesan Rolls, Roasted Garlic Twist

BREAD WAKENS PASSIONS LIKE FEW FOODS CAN. Right from the oven... warm... crusty... wonderfully aromatic! Pure yeast has worked its magic on fresh flours, giving birth to the staff of life.

Our bakers begin their alchemy at the break of dawn. They combine some of Nature's basic materials -- flours, water, sugar, salt and yeast -- to produce a soft resilient dough. After a time of kneading, the baker's sensitive touch can tell that the ingredients have "joined" and hat the time has come to let the dough relax, and rise.

Time ticks by, until the dough has about doubled in volume. Our baker gently press into the risen dough. If it does not fill back in, it's ready to be made into loaves.

Our baker takes some of the dough and rolls it out with a big, wooden rolling pin. Working quickly, lest the dough cool, the baker folds and shapes the dough, then places it into an oft-used brad pan, to rise again. At just the right moment, the dough is put into a hot oven, soon to become... bread!

Some of the dough has been kept aside. Cheddar cheese is mixed with the dough. Then pepperoni, spices, herbs are added. Our baker cuts the dough into three, thick strips, then deftly braids them together and set it into a pan to rise. Soon, it, too is in the oven.

When the loaves have turned a golden brown, one is removed from the oven and quickly turned out of its pan. Our baker taps it on the bottom, and listens to the sound. A properly baked loaf will sound done, as well as look done. When perfectly baked, the loaves are placed on a tray and brought proudly out to our bakery counter, and to you.

Perhaps you see why we call our breads "Homemade." They are not made by machines, but by people. Only sensitive human beings are able to feel when the dough is kneaded just right, and see when it has risen enough, and hear when it is perfectly baked.

Our bakers work their magic for you, right here at the Huntington Country Store. They prepare as many as 20 different kinds of breads. Each has its own feel, its own rate of rising, its own baking time, and of course, its own incredible aroma.

Please stop in soon and feast your eyes on what our bakers have created for you. We promise that you won't find baked goods quite like ours across the length and breadth of America. It's right here in Huntington, and it's here every day of the week. all year round. Come in and enjoy the magic.

About us

The Huntington Country Store is owned and operated by the Butler family. (Randy and Becky and their children.) It's a business they all love and one they want to continue for years to come. In many ways, it is a dream come true.

Like many dreams it is hard to tell where it began. When they moved to Huntington to live over the store in 1994, Becky and Randy had no idea how wonderful the town and the surrounding area would be. They were delighted to be so welcomed by the townspeople. They remember lots of warm smiles and neighborly visits as they got to know new friends. Gardner State Park, Pettis Field and beautiful Norwich Lake were easy to visit and just added to their joy. A dream was taking shape, a dream to work hard and be happy in a place of their own.

Living in Huntington, raising their children and running the Huntington Country Store is wonderful for Becky and Randy. They loved the country life and fresh, clean air. Working at the store was always enjoyable and fun if not a little hectic at times which only added to the challenge.

Support Local Business

By supporting locally owned family businesses you give a community its unique flavor. Towns across America have similar chain stores, restaurants, and grocery stores but that store down the street where you have the Wrapple, ice cream, bakery, and a building that is over 200 years old is one-of-a-kind. The combined presence of small locally owned family businesses makes it different from every other town in the world. By supporting locally owned family businesses, you ensure that uniqueness of your town.
